On the Map: The Atlas of Family Homelessness in New York City - October 2014

10/2014

There are now over 24,000 homeless children sleeping in New York City shelters, up 44% since 2002. For the first time, the facts around family homelessness in New York City have been pulled together in one place, revealing the scope of family homelessness citywide and locally in each New York City Council District. This report identifies the factors that drive family instability and homelessness, and ranks Council Districts by the number of family shelter units they offer. Rates of poverty, child poverty, unemployment, educational attainment, rent burden, overcrowded rental housing, and public assistance rates are analyzed to share a fuller picture of the problem.

Web-extra: See how each city council district ranks in terms of number of family shelter units, as well as where it stands on other major factors affecting family homelessness.
